Shoulder-Fore & In-Position are two often misunderstood and underused tools that are very important to have in your toolbox for increased straightness, for better preparation for lateral work and for a multitude of other applications.
Below is a PDF link to a few pages from the German National Equestrian Federation's Advanced Techniques of Dressage, Book 2. It describes horse position, rider aids for, and benefits of "shoulder-fore," which is known also as first position. It also describes these same horse position, rider aids and benefits of the movement known as "in-position," also known also as second position.
Both Shoulder-Fore and In-Position are extremely helpful to increase straightness and pushing power. Note the following from the PDF link below:
"A horse cannot be positioned perfectly straight until it has mastered all the lateral movements. Only then is the rider in a position to keep the horse straight at all times with the minimum of effort and the lightest of aids. This, in its turn, is an essential prerequisite for the higher levels of collection."
Take a look at this excerpt from this wonderful, but unfortunately out of print book. The Germans have mastered the art, even in translation, of clear and specific language. You will be sure to find some additional clarity regarding horse position, rider aids and benefits to help your lateral work and straightness for your next ride.
